Biography
Born in London, Chinnery spent most of his working life in India and on the China coast. The preeminent artist of British India from 1802 his paintings and drawings record the world of the British East India Company.
He lived in Madras, Calcutta and Dacca where he taught Sir Charles D’Oyly. In 1825 he sailed for China to escape his creditors and his wife and built a thriving practise amongst the trading community in Macao, Hong Kong and Canton.
He worked in oils and watercolours and painted miniatures and numerous sketches, many inscribed in his distinctive shorthand.
