John Linnell was a highly successful artist during his lifetime. He had a thriving portrait practice, but his real passion was always landscape painting. Largely self-taught, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1805, and he became a pupil of John Varley at around the same time. From 1807 to 1811, he exhibited oil paintings, mainly genre scenes and landscapes, at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution. From the late 1840s, he abandoned portraiture in favour of landscapes. Deeply religious, his work includes Biblical as well as English landscapes. Throughout his life, his work was much in demand and he became very prosperous.
