Biography
John Nixon was one of the best known caricaturists of urban society in late eighteenth century London. The son of Robert Nixon, a successful Irish merchant, he followed his father in a mercantile career. Nixon lived and worked at Basinghall Street, near Guildhall Yard in the City of London.
He was a special juryman at the Guildhall and a Captain of the Guildhall Volunteers. The amateur artist moved in artistic and fashionable circles in London, acting as honorary secretary of the Beefsteak Club.
Nixon exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1781 and 1813.
